An 18th century villa at the foot of a hill had a garden that had been neglected for 50 years. Brambles were running wild and had climbed up the trunks of palm trees to a height of 5 metres above the ground.
The hollow shape left by a little old stone and clay fish pond in a clearing could still be made out on the ground, but it was totally abandoned and in a terrible state.
A pair of Sarnico stone columns, two large terracotta vases and a millstone were lying on the ground.
The customer commissioned a swimming pond for his many grandchildren to use. He wanted it in the same area as the old fishpond and asked for it to look as if it had always been there, by the villa.
We built a 500 m² swimming pond with a biological filter, in which we placed the two columns. On the opposite side we created a pool for the water lilies and the oxygenating plants, which is complemented by the lively spout of water from a fountain shaped like a lion’s head.
We built a pergola supported by chestnut wood posts with the bark stripped from them. Covered with wisteria, climbing roses and star jasmine, it envelops you in fragrances and colours when you stroll along the southern side of the pond. We found a new home for the old millstone and the vases on the decking and the side of the pond opposite the little diving board.
We brought out the best of the established trees by creating flower beds around their bases and filling them with shade-loving perennial grasses and shrubs. Running around them are shredded bark paths in the cool shade of the undergrowth, where the customer’s grandchildren can play, hide and climb, while adults can unwind with a good book.
The customer’s childhood garden had become inaccessible after many years of neglect, but now he can finally use it again.
He can read and relax in the shady undergrowth and watch his children’s families enjoying a relaxing dip or playing with a ball on the soft grass.
