We were contacted by a bird and insect lover from Monticelli Brusati who wanted to have an ornamental pond built in his garden. The idea was to attract birds and insects while also enabling him to take a dip in clear, safe water.
In this case there was no need for the pond to be suitable for swimming, so we were able to come up with an ornamental creation containing exceptionally clear, high-quality water.
During the design process, the customer explained that all birds are attracted to water but they have different tastes. Some feel the draw of bubbling, flowing water where they can wash themselves, whereas others love to paddle in shallow water where they can find little insects and larvae to eat.
Therefore, we ensured that both of these features were present in the pond and we chose plants that can thrive in water that moves around a little, such as water lilies.
A little clump of hornbeams attracts and provides shelter for small birds, which can nest in them. Fruits and berries that our feathered friends love to eat grow on plants and shrubs that have been dotted about throughout the rest of the garden.
Above the technical compartment is a little area of wooden decking that is the perfect place to lie back, unwind, read a book or drink a nice glass of Franciacorta wine and enjoy the sight of the rolling hills and vineyards in the local area.
The construction of the pond has led to a significant increase in biodiversity, thanks in part to the wide range of wetland, aquatic and submerged plants, which would never have survived in a dry garden.
