We were contacted by a lovely koi enthusiast from Soiano del Garda. She had finally realized her dream of having a pond for her pets. One of the lady’s friends had built the structure for the pond and the filter. She wanted us to come up with a suitable design scheme to make the pond blend in with the rest of the garden.
We started by building an additional small source pond that was higher up than all the rest and fed by the suction pump in the pond, in which we placed some aquatic and wetland shore plants.
A short stream links the source with the fish pond and goes over some pretty little waterfalls. It breathes life into the water and brightens up the garden with its sublime sounds.
We used large limestone rocks to make a rockery around the edge of the source and filled it with a range of Mediterranean plants whose colours add a refined touch. There are a number of slabs made of the same material that serve as walkways and seats, with perfect views of the pond.
There are lots of little compartments in the technical filter area, all of which need to be accessible for regular maintenance. Consequently, we were presented with the tricky task of designing and building a large wooden decking area with a distinctive array of ten or so hatches that are easy to open. The support structure was built on site from galvanized iron tubes. It is covered with thermally modified ash wood for outdoor use, which provides a sophisticated base for sun loungers and an umbrella.
The koi pond now finally not only has a technical area but also blends in harmoniously with the rest of the garden. It is visited on a daily basis by Dea, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog that enthusiastically watched all of the stages in the construction process.
